An 18-year-old has been charged with a series of felonies including carjacking and aggravated assault, following a dramatic series of events in Memphis that culminated in a crash involving two police vehicles. Isaiah Hawkins, identified by the Memphis Police Department, led officers on a pursuit through city streets, causing considerable chaos and ending with his capture in New Chicago.
The tense episode began with the carjacking at a Marathon gas station on Elvis Presley Boulevard, as caught on camera, and detailed by WREG Memphis. The stolen Nissan Maxima was later involved in an accident with two MPD squad cars. The carjacker allegedly pointed a black handgun at the victim's head, demanding money before making a dangerous getaway.
As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the chase led to a section of South Memphis where the said vehicles were wrecked near Bellevue and South Parkway East, and subsequently, a tree at Lucille Price Park became the terminus of the pursued car. Witness Conrad Lanehart told FOX13 Memphis, "It almost sounded like an explosion. Truly," describing one of the squad cars' crash as if "her car actually jackknifed."
Lanehart also witnessed the immediate aftermath and shared his views on the root causes of such incidents: "These kids have free reign to do what they want to do because there is no supervision in the home," he told FOX13 Memphis. The sentiment echoes a growing concern over youth crime in the city.
Hawkins' apprehension at Lucille Price Park, after he crashed the stolen vehicle into a tree at the park's basketball court, marked the end of the incident. According to an arrest affidavit mentioned by Action News 5, this happened just one hour after the initial carjacking took place. Hawkins now faces a legal battle and societal scrutiny as the community grapples with the events and their broader implications.
