A recent road rage incident on I-240 turned violent when a woman allegedly fired a gun at another driver before engaging in a chase that culminated with the suspect's arrest. On Tuesday morning, just before 11:30 a.m., Memphis Police were alerted to a confrontation between two motorists near I-240 and Lamar Avenue in Midtown, as FOX13 Memphis reports. A woman in a black Chevrolet Cobalt is accused of shooting into another vehicle, forcing the other driver to flee the interstate.
The assailant's vehicle was described in police statements as a black Chevrolet Cobalt, the driver allegedly fired several shots at the victim's car during the incident, striking it twice and causing the victim to exit the highway and then the car stopped working after the shooting, which led to the suspect pursuing the victim on foot around a building—the victim eventually found refuge in a vehicle of a helpful bystander. According to Action News 5, the alleged perpetrator is approximately 20-25 years old with an average build and was last seen wearing a black tank top paired with black shorts adorned with two white stripes, alongside white socks and slides.
Cortasia Wheeler, 25, has been identified and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, as stated by Local Memphis. Wheeler, who is currently held at the Shelby County Jail with a bond set at $250,000, was reportedly recognized in a video of the incident, which, alongside several CrimeStoppers tips, led to her arrest.
The police affidavit details the victim's experience, who claimed that Wheeler, with her distinctive red-and-orange braids, accused her of cutting her off in traffic then resorted to shooting at her multiple times as she attempted to drive away; this chilling account was shared with Memphis Police and substantiated by corroborating video evidence.
