In a bid to improve interactions with autistic individuals, the Mesa Police Department has stepped up, becoming a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) as recognized by The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). According to the city's announcement, the department's staff underwent specialized training designed to enhance their ability to assist those with sensory sensitivities. This move is part of a broader initiative to create more inclusive community services.
The certification ensures that police personnel are not only aware but also better prepared to engage with and support the autism community. "Our staff has completed training and certification in best practices when assisting autistic sensory-sensitive individuals," stated the Mesa PD's news release.
The training covered by the certification program includes a range of techniques and strategies to communicate and interact effectively with autistic people. The efforts represent an understanding within the Mesa PD of the necessary steps towards inclusivity and the recognition of diverse needs within the populace they serve.
