Miami Beach is set to light up with the colors of the rainbow as the city's LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee gears up to launch the global Pride Month celebration this Friday. According to an announcement from the City of Miami Beach, a ceremony is slotted to take place on Lincoln Road, bringing together members of the community and allies in a vibrant commencement of June's festivities. Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez, proud of his own identity as a gay man, underscored the importance of both celebration and action, saying, “Even now — 55 years later — our community still struggles to overcome ignorance and intolerance."

In a striking display of solidarity, rainbow-branded public safety vehicles from various agencies will line the iconic road during the ceremony. Caught up in the spirit of the event, vehicles from the Miami Beach Police Department and other agencies, including Bal Harbour and Coral Gables, will be featuring pride colors. Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones, extolling the community's inclusivity, told the city's announcement, “We are an inclusive community that recognizes the many beautiful faces of diversity.”

Lit by the vibrant hues of the rainbow, visitors to Miami Beach can witness the city's embrace of LGBTQIA+ pride throughout June, demonstrated not least by the Progress Pride Flag that waves beside the American flag year-round outside Miami Beach City Hall. Pride Month, a national celebration commemorated in June, pays homage to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising — considered by the Library of Congress to be the catalyst for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.

The festivities extend beyond symbolic gestures, with the practical presence of a Pride lifeguard tower at 12 Street and the beachfront making a statement in broad stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Celebrating love and acceptance doesn't stop with the city, as Lyle Stern, president of the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District (BID), conveyed excitement about partnering with the city for the celebratory month. Anticipating crowds that are as diverse as the colors they celebrate, Stern announced to the city's release, “Pride Month is a celebration of love and acceptance, and the Lincoln Road BID is committed to continue creating a space that is welcoming to everyone.”
