In an effort to promote firearm safety and protect children from gun violence, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) along with the Michigan State Police (MSP) have announced the availability of free gun locks. As part of the National Gun Violence Awareness Month initiative, Michigan families are encouraged to pick up these safety devices at local MDHHS offices and selected local health departments.
The initiative, supported by a significant state funding allotment of $500,000 in the FY24 MSP budget, ensures the availability of 75,000 cable-style gun locks from Project ChildSafe. "Our department is committed to improving the safety and well-being of Michigan children, we are offering these gun locks to keep children and their families safe from firearm violence," MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel expressed in a statement. Several residents have already taken advantage of the program and authorities continue to encourage others to do the same to support overall firearm safety.
Statistics from 2020 reveal a grim reality, with firearm injuries surpassing motor vehicle deaths to become the primary cause of death for both children in the United States and Michigan. Addressing this epidemic, Public Act 17 of 2023 mandates that firearms stored or left unattended must be unloaded and locked. This is particularly imperative when minors are present, is, or could be present on the premises – a fact that became effective as law on February 13, 2024.
“Feeling safe and secure is something every child, and every individual in Michigan deserves. Gun locks save lives,” said Col. James F. Grady II, MSP director. Col. Grady reminds residents that responsible firearm storage is not just a recommendation but a legal requirement, “If you have a firearm in your home, store it properly, away from minors – it’s the law. Safe storage is easy and very accessible." Those interested are directed to visit an MDHHS office or contact local police departments to get a free gun lock, no questions asked.
MDHHS personnel who conduct home visits carry gun locks for distribution to clients in need. Additionally, Michigan residents can secure these safety devices through Project ChildSafe police partners throughout the state. To aid in proper use, gun lock installation instructions are available within the product's packaging and can also be found on the Project ChildSafe website.
