On the evening of June 12, 2024, detectives in New Bedford made a significant arrest of a wanted man who was found to be carrying both a firearm and narcotics. According to a statement released by the New Bedford Police Department, Mr. Jonathan Martinez, a 40-year-old resident of New Bedford, was spotted by Detectives Matthew Couture and Jonathan Miranda while driving in the north-end sector of the city. Martinez was known to have an active warrant.
Upon initiating a traffic stop, Martinez promptly exited his vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. A routine check during his arrest uncovered a loaded 9 mm firearm stowed away in the vehicle's center console, an item for which Martinez did not possess a license. Moreover, officers discovered a baggie of "crack" cocaine on Martinez's person.
Following these discoveries, Martinez faced additional charges, including carrying a loaded firearm and the possession of crack cocaine, along with his original warrant. The New Bedford Police have since encouraged individuals with any information on criminal activities to come forward. Reports can be made anonymously through their website or by calling 508-99-CRIME.
Crime and safety in the city remain a priority for the New Bedford police as they urge witnesses and other informants to help maintain the community's welfare. The arrest of Martinez marks another step in local law enforcement's ongoing effort to confront illegal activities and enhance community safety.
