Residents were jolted by the sound of gunfire in two separate incidents late last night as police were called to investigate shots fired in different neighborhoods. One case resulted in authorities seeking a suspect with multiple arrest warrants already to his name.
According to the New Bedford Police Department, the first instance occurred at the intersection of Summer Street and Weld Street around 1 AM, triggered by a ShotSpotter activation. Upon reaching the site, officers noted damage to the window of a residence but, fortunately, no individuals were harmed.
In a parallel development at Yale Street, police intervention was prompted by reports of a male brandishing a firearm. The investigation pointed to a 22-year-old identified as Mr. Alfredo Loya, suspected of discharging the weapon at the premises before making an escape. The police are currently on the lookout for Loya, who has several active warrants in addition to those from last night's events.
The New Bedford Police urge anyone with insights into the shootings or the whereabouts of Mr. Loya to come forward with information. Tips may be submitted anonymously through the department's website or by calling 508-99-CRIME.
