The sequence of events unfolded when the child, who was enjoying the pool, lost his flotation devices and sank into the water. MassLive reports that the incident happened around 5:08 p.m., at which time the off-duty lifeguard noticed the child underwater and reacted promptly. Officials stated to MassLive that the young boy had been underwater for about 30 seconds before the rescue was carried out.
Following the rescue, the lifeguard immediately performed CPR on the unresponsive child, in what became a life-saving intervention. The child regained consciousness and began breathing again after receiving two rounds of CPR, according to NBC Boston. This prompt action preceded the arrival of Acton police and fire services, who found the child alert and oriented.
In their praise for the lifeguard's actions, Police Chief James Cogan and Fire Chief Anita Arnum commended the teenager for the rescue and lifesaving techniques applied, as reported by Boston 25 News. The child, after receiving emergency care, was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, ensuring his well-being.
