Palm Beach County's efforts to make recreation more accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities, have not gone unnoticed. As recently highlighted, the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department was honored with not just one, but two awards given by the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials. The ceremony took place during the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials annual meeting in San Diego, California earlier this month.

The first accolade, National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials's Universal Accessibility Award, was to recognize the county's All Abilities Play Inclusion Program. Parks and Recreation Department Parks has strived to effortlessly bring about an inclusive environment within their facilities, including the CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex and its suite of adaptive sports equipment and programs. These installations not just enable, but also inspire participation across a wider spectrum of park-goers, from those bounding with youthful energy to the vivacity often retained even in later years of life, according to the Palm Beach County announcement.

Additionally, the same announcement detailed the department's second award, the Park & Recreation Program Award, which was given to the Blind Sports Day Program. This event, in alignment with National Blind Sports Month, shed light on adaptive sports and wooed a new audience eager to dive into sports like Beep Baseball, Goalball and Boccia for Visual Impairments. It was not just an introduction but an invitation into a world where participation in sports can be tailor-made so that every individual finds their space on the field.

Palm Beach County Parks Director Jennifer Cirillo expressed deep gratitude for the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials recognitions, saying, "We're honored to receive these awards from National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials, highlighting our commitment to inclusivity and community engagement." She also added, "The All Abilities Play Inclusion Program and Blind Sports Day Program show our dedication to creating accessible, enriching experiences for everyone," pointing out the joy witnessed among participants. she told the Palm Beach County newsroom. Cirillo shared the excitement to expand the department's efforts that include, among others, a new Miracle League field and more communication boards at playgrounds, in hopes to further open the embrace of the natural spaces under her purview.
