In a disturbing incident on a Pflugerville ISD school bus, a 13-year-old student named Caden Williams was attacked by adults following a verbal altercation with another student, it was first reported by KVUE. The attack happened as students were being dropped off from summer school at Dessau Elementary School.
According to Caden's mother Kelsie Trevino, her son had exchanged heated words with another student on the bus, and after being separated the situation escalated when the other student enlisted family members who boarded the bus and assaulted Caden, leaving him with injuries including cuts to his face, a neck sprain and, a head injury. Despite the rapid development of the assault, where the bus driver was pushed aside and Caden was dragged from seat to seat according to Trevino’s interview with FOX 7 Austin, it appears there may have been a window of opportunity to de-escalate or prevent the situation entirely.
Arrests have been made in connection with the assault, including two adults and two juveniles, KVUE's report notes, citing charges that range from injury to a child to engaging in organized criminal activity. Pflugerville ISD has also issued a letter to parents assuring them that an investigation is underway and that student safety is their top priority, a communication shared by FOX 7 Austin.
Despite the shocking nature of the attack and the questions it raises regarding the safety procedures on school buses, the district's spokeswoman, Tamra Spence, has stated to FOX 7 Austin that the police department is looking to "wrap up the investigation quickly," meanwhile, Trevino seeks answers and accountability, wondering what could have been done differently and what measures will be implemented in the future to safeguard children.
Trevino, while distressed, acknowledges that there may be disciplinary action for her son's part in the initial altercation but is firm in her desire for proper repercussions for the adults involved and the security protocols that failed that day, as Trevino told KVUE, "[The student's family] could have contacted or asked Caden to call his parents or to call his family to get the matters resolved."
