
A tragic turn of events unfolded in South Phoenix in the early hours of May 30, when a woman was fatally shot outside her home. Genoveva Antillon, 38, succumbed to a gunshot wound after being transported to a hospital following the incident that occurred just after 1:30 a.m. near 16th Street and Roeser Road, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
Phoenix police arrested 35-year-old Maury Williamson in connection with the shooting. During an an investigation, Williamson provided statements that "were inconsistent with the crime scene," according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. After being pressed on these inconsistencies, Williamson reportedly admitted to accidently shooting Antillon when he fired at a dog on the property, which he believed was attacking him.
The discovery of the firearm used in the shooting added to the suspect's woes as it was found hidden inside the mobile home, said Sgt. Krynsky. Police had to obtain a search warrant to recover the weapon. Williamson, who has a history of felony crimes and is a prohibited possessor, was booked on multiple felonies that include manslaughter, weapons violations, and tampering with evidence.
Detailing the events, AZ Family reported that when police arrived at the scene, they found Antillon shot outside the house and rushed her to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Those present on the property at the time of the shooting claimed to have heard only the gunshots. Court documents further revealed that Williamson's panic-driven reaction to shoot a the animal led to the tragic mistake, with bullets striking Antillon who was behind the dog.
The case continues to unfold as authorities dig deeper into the circumstances that led to this unintended fatality. Williamson's charges reflect the gravity of a situation wherein a life was lost and the community shaken by the sudden eruption of violence in the quiet of night.
