A sobering update has come through from the Phoenix Police Department concerning a recent officer-involved shooting. The department released a Critical Incident Briefing video that catalogs the harrowing events of May 28. Routine turned critical when two South Mountain Precinct officers attempted to stop a man on a bicycle for a perceived traffic violation at 10th Street and Southern Avenue.
Reportedly, the situation escalated rapidly as the man, having been approached by the officer who was riding passenger, turned combative. Assisting his colleague, the driver emerged hurriedly and joined the fray. During the struggle, in a moment that underscores the volatility of routine patrols, the man brandished a handgun and opened fire, wounding one officer in the leg. "The other officer returned fire hitting the man," the official report stated. The officers were both approximate three-year veterans of the force.
Despite the injury, the officers managed to disarm the suspect. As additional police personnel arrived, they worked to detain the combative individual. According to the briefing, after he was shot, "The suspect continued to struggle with the uninjured officer." It was after this continual struggle that the suspect, still aggressive, was ultimately handcuffed and arrested.
First aid was rendered to the injured officer at the scene before being taken to the hospital, where they remain in serious but stable condition. Tragically, the suspect succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. A handgun was recovered at the site of the altercation, which adds more context to this life-threatening encounter.
The dual nature of such incident investigations was underscored, with the Phoenix Police Department explaining that a criminal probe into the shooting is underway, along with an administrative one. "Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete," they noted. Maricopa County Attorney's Office will have the final say on the criminal investigation while internal processes determine adherence to department policy.
