Encanto Park in Phoenix has stepped up its game with a fresh, ADA-accessible playground designed for kids of varying abilities. The park, a staple for family outings, now touts features like the Sway-fun glider – a delight for kids with mobility challenges, allowing them to swing alongside their peers. The newest upgrade, meant to level the playing field for children with disabilities, was opened to the public as announced by the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.
While inclusivity might be the buzzword of the decade, the people at Phoenix Parks and Recreation are making it a reality, going beyond mere lip service. The Encanto Park facelift includes a communications board sign, enabling those with speech challenges or in the early learning stages, to express themselves fluidly – because nothing should stop the chatter and laughter at a playground. "Encanto Park has always been a beloved destination for families in our community. With this new ADA-accessible playground, we are taking a step towards creating an even more inclusive and welcoming environment for all children," District 4 Councilwoman Laura Pastor said, as reported by the Phoenix.gov.
The features extend to swings tailored with safety belts, full bucket seats for infants, and special seating for those with limited upper body strength. These thoughtful additions ensure that playtime is barrier-free and fun is had by all. This isn't an afterthought charity; it's a conscious stride towards inclusive play, sponsored, in part, by the generous donations from local community organizations like the Kiwanis Club of Phoenix.
"Supporting the creation of an all-abilities playground means building a world where every child, regardless of their challenges, can experience the joy of play," Elizabeth Duncan from the Kiwanis Club of Phoenix asserted, a sentiment reflecting the club's philosophy towards community support and action, according to the Phoenix.gov. This strategic, heartfelt approach to recreation infrastructure captures the essence of inclusivity, where the goal is not just to accommodate but to celebrate diversity in play and interaction.
With summer beckoning, the timing couldn't be better. Families from every corner of Phoenix and beyond have an open invite to check out the all-new, all-awesome playground at Encanto Park. Another nod to public spaces getting it right – let's hope it's a sign of more inclusive upgrades to come in parks everywhere. Encanto Park, you'll find, is conveniently located at 2605 N. 15th Ave., with doors wide open from the early chirps of 5:30 a.m. to nightfall at 11 p.m.
