As the City of Phoenix gears up to observe the Juneteenth holiday, residents should expect some adjustments to city services on Wednesday, June 19. According to a notice from the City of Phoenix, while solid waste collection will continue as usual, some other facilities, including the public libraries and transfer stations, will close for the day.
City-operated community centers will be taking a pause as the holiday is observed. In a statement obtained by the City of Phoenix, “City of Phoenix Community centers will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 for the holiday.” However, despite the closures, parks and trails will remain open for those looking to spend part of the holiday outdoors. For residents planning to head out to the trails, the city has reminded them to follow "Take a Hike. Do it Right." safety guidelines.
Public transportation will largely run on a regular weekday schedule, but travelers should note that several public transit centers, including Ed Pastor, Sunnyslope, and Central Station will be shut. Dial-a-Ride services will be available but require a reservation.
For those flying, some extra planning may be needed. Sky Harbor International Airport suggests passengers reserve their parking in advance and arrive at the airport well before their flight. They advise, “Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight departs if you are flying domestically, three hours if you are flying internationally.” In preparation for the Juneteenth holiday, guests are encouraged to verify their flight status before heading to the airport and can take advantage of the PHX Reserve program to ease the stress of security screening, as mentioned by the City of Phoenix official website.
As for parking on Juneteenth, all meters in the city will still be enforced from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The city emphasized the need for keen compliance despite the celebration when it said, “All parking meters are enforced 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays.”
