A Pompano Beach man faces charges for animal cruelty following the discovery of 10 dogs found in distress inside a storage facility. According to WSVN, the Broward Sheriff's Office arrested Cassius Ali Cooper, 34, after deputies arrived at 91 NE Ninth St. on June 3 to investigate reports of animal abuse.

Encrusted with feces, responding to the scene, BSO detectives uncovered 10 dogs confined in cages within a non-ventilated unit with little access to water and no food. Cooper was detained at the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center when he tried to retrieve the dogs, as reported by CBS News Miami.

The conditions described were grim: "The first cage had two puppies, the second cage had six puppies, the third cage had one full-grown female dog and the fourth cage had one full-grown male dog with a heavy metal chain around his neck," investigators told WSVN. "The cages were encrusted with feces and filth. There was no food in the cages and minimal water that was brown, not fresh."

Currently held at Broward's Main Jail, the accused now faces ten counts of animal cruelty, involving charges related to torment and deprivation, as well as the mutilation of animals. In distress when found by BSO detectives, the dogs inside the non-ventilated unit, barking and whimpering could be heard before authorities made the rescue, details CBS News Miami in their account of the incident.
