Last Wednesday, just before the clock struck 1 AM, an unusual parking decision led to a serious arrest outside a hotel on Westgate Drive in Brockton. According to a report by Massachusetts State Police News, State Troopers Matthew McCarthy and Austin Rose were on a routine patrol when they noticed a Ford EcoSport suspiciously parked in front of the hotel's main entrance. Their investigation quickly took a sharp turn into criminal territory.
Troopers initiated a dialogue with the individual inside the vehicle, identifying him as 19-year-old Qoriyo Abdirizak of Portland, Maine. During the encounter, Trooper McCarthy observed an open folding knife within arm's reach of Abdirizak's left hand, which prompted them to further ensure their safety and investigate. Trooper Rose proceeded to safely remove Abdirizak from the vehicle and administer a frisk, during which they discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson .380 caliber pistol in the pocket of his sweatshirt. According to the authorities, Abdirizak lacked the necessary license to legally carry a firearm.
Following the discovery, Trooper McCarthy and Trooper Rose secured both the knife and the firearm, and placed Abdirizak under arrest. Per their report, he was read his Miranda rights and then transported to the SP-Milton Barracks for the standard booking procedures, which included fingerprinting and taking photographs.
Subsequently, Abdirizak faced arraignment in Brockton District Court on multiple criminal charges. These encompass carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without an FID. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the concealed dangers law enforcement may encounter and underscores the importance of vigilance in routine patrols.
