Two weeks have passed since 12-year-old Maria Gomez-Perez vanished from her Gainesville home, and with her whereabouts still unknown, the Hall County Sheriff's Office has upped the stakes. An additional $10,000 contribution from an anonymous businessperson has pushed the reward for information leading to her safe return to $30,000, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. On May 29, 2024, Gomez-Perez was last seen around 10 a.m. on Westside Drive in Gainesville, leaving a community grappling with her sudden disappearance.
At a recent press conference, Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch labeled the situation as dire, proclaiming the young girl to be in danger. With the reward increase, it's hoped that those holding key details will be prompted to step forward. "Someone in the community has that single clue or piece of information that could lead to Maria," Couch said in a statement obtained by 11Alive. "I pray this increased reward is encouragement for them to come forward."
The mobilization to locate Gomez-Perez has brought together over 70 individuals from various agencies, including the FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security, alongside the assistance of the Consulate of Guatemala. Local efforts to disseminate information have seen 50,000 fliers distributed and the installation of digital billboards strategically placed across heavily-trafficked roads within the county.
Authorities are examining the possibility that Gomez-Perez may have made contact with someone outside her home on the day she disappeared. While the identity of this individual remains elusive, investigators are scouring phone data and social media to piece together her movements. Sheriff Couch emphasized the community's role in the investigation, stating previously that authorities are "following every lead they get, but so far, none of those leads have led us to Maria." Described as 5-foot-3 and weighing between 100 and 110 pounds, with brown eyes and dark hair, she was reported missing the following day after last being seen wearing a bright blue shirt, as reported by 11Alive.
