A tragic pattern echoes across the waters of Lake Corpus Christi, where for the second time in as many weeks, a life has been lost. San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera confirmed the body of a 19-year-old man from Robstown was recovered Sunday evening following a distressing incident involving a pontoon boat. KSAT reported that "Initial reports was that a young man may have fallen from a pontoon boat, went under & did not surface," a haunting reminder of the lake's recent history.
Responders to the incident included dedicated teams from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and San Patricio County Constables Office. A coordinated search ensued, peering into the depths of the 21,000-acre reservoir until they discovered the young man at the lake's bottom. He has been identified as Chris Ruiz, stated MySanAntonio.com. The consternation and sorrow are palpable as the sheriff offered his "sincere condolences to his family & friends."
This somber discovery closely follows another, where on June 2, a 13-year-old boy drowned after jumping from a drift jon boat, joining a lineage of grief that the lake has borne witness to. According to Rivera's account provided to KIII TV, five teenagers had been on the boat when they decided to swim, and tragedy ensued as the boy went under and did not surface. The next day's efforts by Texas Game Wardens Underwater Search and Recovery Team pulled him back from the abyss, though too late to thwart the cruel clutches of fate.
