Juneteenth in Roswell this year is a dynamic display of culture and history, spanning exhibits and performances that delve into African American heritage. The City of Roswell has put together an ensemble of events that offer residents and visitors a chance to reflect, celebrate, and learn more about the significance of this holiday.
Beginning June 7, the Roswell Cultural Arts Center will showcase a group exhibition titled ‘Juneteenth: Our Freedom Exhibit,’ done in collaboration with African American for the Arts. The exhibit is a collection of various mediums—paintings, sculptures, textiles, and adornments—that articulate artists’ perspectives influenced by freedom and liberation narratives. According to the City of Roswell website, the exhibit, which runs through July 31, is community-centric and free to the public.
An opening reception on June 14 will kick off the exhibit, offering attendees a chance to witness stirring artwork, engage in artist talks, and enjoy live theatrical performances. The event promises to honor the holiday and the deep-seated expressions of African American history and pride at no cost for those who attend.
Theatrical narratives come to life with "The Spirit of Harriet Tubman" and "Unbossed & Unbowed: The Shirley Chisholm Story." Leslie McCurdy's portrayal of the iconic Underground Railroad conductor, Harriet Tubman, offers an intimate journey through her life and legacy. Ingrid Griffith, meanwhile, channels Shirley Chisholm, the trailblazing politician and activist. These performances scheduled for June 15 and 16 dive into the enduring spirits of these historic figures, with tickets available for purchase on the official City of Roswell website.
Further exploring the local African American narrative, the Smith Plantation will host "Exploring Black Experiences in Roswell" on June 19. This program aims to educate on the past, uncovering the untold stories of the enslaved people whose labor was pivotal to Roswell's development. Such a curated experience underscores the importance of Juneteenth, a day marking the end of slavery in the U.S., now recognized as a federal holiday to honor African American contributions to society. Additional details regarding all the Juneteenth celebration events in Roswell are accessible through the City of Roswell dedicated webpage.
