Flames ravaged neighborhoods on the East Side, leaving residents grappling with loss and displacement. In San Antonio, a single-story home burned down on Sunday afternoon near Kayton and Hallie Avenue, as reported by FOX San Antonio. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, salvaging a vehicle and potentially some belongings. The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed that no injuries occurred, and the two displaced individuals have secured temporary shelter with family.
On the same day, a series of conflagrations tore through East San Jose, as detailed by Yahoo News. Three separate fires were reported near Quimby Road and Sand Point Drive, with residents dislocated and homes destroyed. Heather Turner, a resident for 40 years, expressed her dismay, saying, "I need a new garage now. Definitely. I don’t know how much got into the house. I can’t see. It’s very smokey," as she told KTVU her harrowing brush with the blaze. The high winds were likely culprits in spreading the fire, according to statements from San Jose Fire Dept. officials.
Amid the chaos, the community's spirit shone as neighbors rallied to assist those in harm's way." I saw the smoke. I came over here. We were driving, and we saw a house catch on fire right in front of us. We were told there was a blind dude. So, we went running in there and pulled him out," recounted Abel of San Jose to KTVU. Echoing his sentiment, Gabriel, also from San Jose, explained "I live down the street. We already helped put out two fires. One of them seemed to have started because there were a bunch of dry leaves in the front yard,", as reported by Yahoo News.
While the potent smell of gas hung early at the scene, fire officials have not confirmed it as the initiator of these destructive events. The Red Cross made its presence known, offering aid where required, and investigations by the fire department continued into the precise genesis of the fires. This all occurred as hundreds of Bay Area firefighters were already engaged in a battle against the Corral Fire, further south of Livermore.
