In San Antonio, a case of severe animal cruelty surfaced after the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office rescued 26 dogs from a northwest-side residence. The incident occurred on Thursday in the 7800 block of Fossil Banks, where deputies, responding to reports of mistreated dogs and a rat infestation, encountered a stench of urine and feces upon entering the home, as reported by KENS5.

The homeowner, identified as Michael Moore, allowed the deputies into the home, where they uncovered "deplorable living conditions," according to a statement by the Sheriff's Office. Many of the rescued dogs were found encrusted in feces, and one dog was found dead in the kitchen. The living room floor was said to be covered, in feces. KSAT noted that Moore has been arrested and faces, at least one charge of cruelty to a non-livestock animal, with the potential for additional charges pending the health evaluation of the dogs.

The BCSO detailed the assistance of Bexar County Animal Control, the City of San Antonio Animal Control, and Bexar County Fire Hazmat in the rescue operation. The dogs, suffering from various health issues including poor body weight and visible spines, were taken to a local veterinarian. The veterinarian confirmed the dogs had urine stains on their fur and feces encrusted in their paws and nails.

Following the arrest, jail records shared by KSAT indicate that Moore was booked just after 3 a.m. on Friday. He was released on bond around 4:20 p.m. that day. The Bexar County Sheriff’s office is urging anyone with knowledge of animal cruelty cases to contact them directly in an effort to prevent, further incidents and protect animals in the community.
