As scorching temperatures bear down on San Antonio, Edgewood Independent School District has decided to delay the start of their graduation ceremonies, a precautionary move to ensure the safety and comfort of attendees and graduates alike. In a statement obtained by KENS 5, officials confirmed that Kennedy High School and Memorial High School graduations, scheduled to be held at Edgewood Veterans Stadium, would now begin at 8:30 p.m.—pushed back by thirty minutes.
This latest announcement comes in the wake of similar adjustments made by San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), who have swiftly decided to move its graduations indoors. With the gates to Edgewood Veterans Stadium set to open at 7:15 p.m. for families, these later start times are clearly a response to the soaring high heat index that has become a growing concern across the region.
According to the adjusted schedule, Kennedy High School will celebrate its commencement on Wednesday, June 5, at the newly slated time, while Memorial High School will follow on Thursday, June 6, also at 8:30 p.m.
Adjacent to these developments, SAISD has opted for a complete venue change for three of their high schools' ceremonies. As a precautionary action to simultaneously keep their participants cool and safe, district officials announced on their website, and covered by News 4 San Antonio, the relocations from Alamo Stadium to the Alamo Convocation Center, an indoor facility. Brackenridge, Sam Houston, and Highlands High Schools will respectively take their turns under the indoor spotlight from June 4 to June 8.
