In the heart of downtown San Antonio, the historic Grace Lutheran Church is taking a stand against a surge in vandalism. Pastor Bethany Hull Somers highlighted an alarming pattern of property crime afflicting the local landmark. "We’re right in the heart of downtown," she said. "It’s becoming more common." In response, the church has elected to safeguard its premises with a new set of customized window guards, designed to protect its parishioners and its treasured stained glass. This decision comes not just as a preventative measure but as a manifestation of the church's adaption to the city's evolving framework of security needs.

According to KSAT, these custom-made window guards strive to seamlessly combine aesthetics with functionality, preserving the beauty and historic value of the church while deterring potential break-ins. In a statement obtained by KSAT, Pastor Hull Somers expressed the church's priority: "I think that it’s this balance of protecting people and also trying to preserve the beauty and historicity of our building." Arc Fab Contracting, responsible for the custom design, was to find a way to reconcile this delicate balance.

The company, owned by Kyle Bonnema, has seen a marked pivot in its operations as vandalism and preventative measures gain momentum in the city. In an interview with KSAT, Bonnema shared, "Everything seems to be custom nowadays," indicating the specific nature of solutions sought by clients, like Grace Lutheran Church, grappling with the complexities of urban crime. When queried about the rise in demand for such preventative work, Bonnema revealed, "I would say 50% at least," underscoring the significance of customized security measures in his business.

While these protective installations represent a proactive step, Pastor Hull Somers noted that the church's response to San Antonio's changing circumstances isn't static. "We’re really proud of the services that happen here on our campus there," Hull Somers told Ground News, emphasizing the church's commitment to the community while acknowledging the necessity to robustly adapt to protect everyone involved.
