A woman was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her back after being shot by a man believed to be her boyfriend at a Northeast Side apartment complex in San Antonio. Officials report that the incident unraveled yesterday evening and precipitated a standoff with local law enforcement.
According to KENS 5, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) arrived at the Horizon Pointe Apartments, nearby the intersection of Woodlake Parkway and Interstate 10, shortly before 6:30 p.m. after receiving a distress call from the victim. SAPD Sgt. Mario Montoya indicated that the woman named her boyfriend as the shooter, and neighbors directed police to the suspect, a 19-year-old male harbored in another apartment on the upper floor.
Initial attempts to coax the suspect out of the apartment were not fruitful. But after negotiations, he surrendered to authorities around 8:00 p.m., as noted in a statement obtained by KENS 5. "We depend on eyewitnesses, people who are willing to come forward with what they saw," Montoya explained. "Because of somebody that was here, we were able to quickly ascertain where the suspect was. If it wasn't for these people, it’s very likely the suspect could’ve gotten away."
KSAT reported that the situation caused the evacuation of residents from the top floor of the building as a safety precaution. Details about what instigated the altercation, remains undisclosed. Nevertheless, the collective response of the neighbors and the rapid arrival of the SAPD culminated in both the apprehension of the suspect and the critical aid rendered to the victim, who police say, is in stable condition.
