A grisly discovery near downtown San Jose has marked a grim milestone as the city tallies its 17th homicide of the year. The Mercury News reports that police were summoned to the scene late Sunday morning after receiving a distressing call about an incapacitated individual. Despite the efforts of first responders, the victim was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead near Roosevelt Park, in the vicinity of 17th and East Santa Clara streets.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide but have yet to release extensive details about the victim or any suspected perpetrators. The San Jose Police Department acknowledged the incident on social media, stating, "This event is being investigated as a homicide," a terse admission hinting at the violence that had unfolded and the lingering questions left in its wake. Meanwhile, residents were urged to steer clear of the area as law enforcement delved into the fray of their investigation.
San Jose's alarming homicide count comes on the heels of another recent act of violence. Last Monday, a shooting in the 300 block of North 20th Street claimed the life of a woman, with officials reporting that she succumbed to "physical trauma." Her demise, as described by San José Police Media Relations, was one of several incidents contributing to a five-day span of bloodshed. In that same episode, a male victim suffered minor injuries, and the responsible shooter was apprehended following a standoff with the police.
Units are currently in the area of 17th St. and E. Santa Clara St. for a report of a person down. Despite life saving measures, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. This event is being investigated as a homicide.
