The search is on for a man who caused an estimated $6,000 in damages at the San Marcos post office, with police seeking assistance from the public. According to surveillance video, the suspect is a white male in his 20s, sporting a thin build and brown hair, and was last seen wearing a variety of casual clothing. His attire included a brown baseball cap, glasses, a peach-colored polo shirt, and light-colored shorts, along with white socks and gray-and-white shoes. Captured on camera, the man’s frustration with a jammed package drop box escalated to vandalism.
As reported by FOX 7 Austin, the vandalism took place around 10:30 p.m. on May 19, at the Bugg Lane location. After an unsuccessful attempt in forcibly trying to pry the drop box open, the suspect then proceeded to kick a monitor twice in the self-service area. Before leaving the premises in a silver SUV, he left another mark of his anger on the entering door, cracking the glass with a final kick.
Authorities are keen on closing this case and have reached out to the public for any leads. "Anyone with information is encouraged to contact SMPD's non-emergency number at 512-753-2108 or reach out directly to Detective Bennett at 512-753-2130," as emphasized by the CBS Austin coverage of the incident. The San Marcos Police Department has revealed the extent of the material destruction, but the ripple effects of such an act disturb the communal peace that a post office—a cornerstone of local infrastructure—is supposed to embody.
The suspect left the scene after retrieving his packages from the kiosk, took decisive steps towards the door, and dealt a final blow to the glass. Police have asked that the suspect's description be circulated and have called for vigilance within the community, in the hopes that someone might recognize the man responsible for the night's disorder and come forward with crucial information. Meanwhile, the Bugg Lane post office has begun to address reparations, with the damage there standing as a stark reminder of the incident's abrupt violence.
