San Mateo Police Department apprehended a 22-year-old local resident, Moris Ruiz-Canizales, on suspicion of multiple criminal offenses following a disturbance reported on June 2. According to the official release from SMPD, the incident stemmed from a 911 call concerning an altercation between a couple at a home on North Grant.
Police officers, in response, found Ruiz-Canizales seated in a vehicle near the home. A subsequent vehicle search led to the discovery of illegal fireworks and marijuana. Upon searching Ruiz-Canizales' bedroom, officials were also to locate a wealth of contraband. This trove included over nine pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine totaling 162 grams, an unregistered firearm with a silencer, ammunition, and a substantial quantity of dangerous fireworks. The operation underscores the importance of community involvement in crime surveillance and reporting.
Ruiz-Canizales now faces a comprehensive list of charges: transportation of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition, and a silencer, possession of paraphernalia, possession of marijuana for sale, and holding fireworks without a permit, among others. The SMPD reiterated the need for community support in reporting crimes and offered effective guidance on witnessing and reporting criminal activities. "If you witness a crime, contact police immediately. Try to remain as calm as possible and do your best to answer questions on the phone," officials urged in the statement.
Following the arrest, Ruiz-Canizales was booked into the San Mateo County Jail. As investigations continue, authorities emphasize the value of cooperation from residents, requesting that anyone with further information contact them.
