In a grueling 14-inning marathon that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Toronto Blue Jays edged out the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3, capping off the night with a stunning two-run homer by Davis Schneider. Schneider's shot came on the first pitch from Pirates right-hander Kyle Nicolas, marking the player's seventh home run of the season and giving the Blue Jays their first game-winning hit of the year, as per CBS News Pittsburgh.
Prior to his home run heroics, Schneider was struggling at the plate with a 0 for 5 and three strikeouts. However, it appears that a timely piece of advice from assistant hitting coach Matt Hague turned his night around. "He was like 'You’ve got to start a little bit earlier, this guy is throwing 98,'" Schneider told CBS News Pittsburgh, sharing the crucial adjustment that led to his late-game success.
The victory was sweetened by the Blue Jays' bullpen, which combined for seven no-hit innings led by Génesis Cabrera's (1-1) 1 2/3 innings to seal the win. The Blue Jays also debuted their fresh City Connect uniforms in style, notching their fourth consecutive victory and tying a season-best winning streak. This was highlighted in WKBN coverage of the game.
Other game highlights included a sacrifice fly by the Pirates' Bryan Reynolds and a game-tying hit by the Blue Jays' George Springer, adding to the high tension of the extra innings. Springer also dazzled defensively with a "sensational diving catch," that Pirates manager Derek Shelton called "the best catch we’ve seen all year," as CBS News Pittsburgh reported. Springer’s fielding prowess, however, couldn't prevent Ji Hwan Bae from scoring, tying the game and setting the stage for Schneider’s later heroics.
Toronto's lineup was not at full strength due to injuries. Notably, the 2022 Cy Young Award finalist, Alek Manoah, was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a sprained elbow after leaving a start earlier in the week, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. The team also made a roster move by acquiring Ryan Burr from Philadelphia in exchange for cash considerations to bolster their pitching staff.
