Gainesville law enforcement officials have secured a second arrest in the case of the April homicide of Jaishawn Overstreet, a 16-year-old Gainesville teen. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Quaran Jamir Jackson, 18, also from Gainesville, was taken into custody on murder charges. The arrest was made without incident at Jackson's residence, and he is now being held at the Hall County Jail.
According to authorities, the fatal event involving Overstreet occurred on April 27, 2024, at the Ridgecrest Apartments on Roper Hill Road. Jackson is facing charges of felony murder and felony aggravated assault. Warrants for Jackson's arrest were secured prior to his apprehension, suggesting a meticulous piece of detective work amidst a multi-agency collaboration. Promptly arrested at the end of May over the same incident was 19-year-old Ja'quez Jeremiah Marquis Sims, charged with felony malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault.
WSBTV's coverage sheds light on the circumstances that led to the tragic incident, mentioning that Overstreet had gone to the apartment complex to meet with someone, apparently with the intent to commit a crime, though the crime itself was not specified. After being shot, Overstreet was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The investigation into Overstreet's death has been a cooperative effort, involving the Gainesville Police Department, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, and the FBI Major Offender’s Task Force. While the precise sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting remains obscure, the arrest of Jackson certainly seems a significant move towards unraveling the incident's full scope.
