Residents in the city of Seguin should take note that city offices, along with the Seguin Public Library, will be taking a day off in honor of a historical turning point—Juneteenth. According to an announcement on the City of Seguin's official website, these non-emergency facilities won't be available on Wednesday, June 19, as the city observes the holiday which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Regular operations are slated to resume come Thursday, June 20.
While the temporary close of city offices might be inconvenient for some, the city ensures that essential sanitation services remain unaffected, with garbage and recycling pick-ups occurring on their usual schedule, expect no disruptions in these services. Juneteenth, previously unsanctioned with the weight that it holds today—a weight born of blood, and struggle, and an eventual, if delayed recognition—it now stands as a federal holiday as of 2021, though its significance in Texas dates deeper, back to 1865.
