Shelby County residents have had a weekend steeped in community spirit and environmental consciousness. Former Shelby County Commissioner Sidney Chism kept up the tradition with the 23rd Annual Community Picnic on Friday. Chism, as reported by Action News 5, is pleased to see the ongoing success of the event, saying, "There was a need for [this community event], You look around and you see all the kids enjoying themselves."

Following the Picnic was the Shelby County Health Department's 'Fight the Bite' festival on Saturday, supporting National Mosquito Control Awareness Week which runs from June 20-26. According to Local Memphis, Dr. Michelle Taylor, SCHD director-health officer, stated, “Shelby County is fortunate to have a comprehensive mosquito control program that monitors for mosquito-borne disease and combats mosquito breeding and adult mosquito populations in every Shelby County zip code.” The event aimed to elevate public understanding of mosquito-borne diseases and preventive measures.

Located at Gaisman Community Center, 'Fight the Bite' featured educational activities, complete with music and games that catered to both children and adults, emphasizing community engagement in a fun and informative setting. In playing host to the 'Fight the Bite' festival, Gaisman Community Center added a layer of educational outreach to the weekend's community-focused events.
