Six men were wounded in a chaotic shootout on a peaceful DeKalb County street, with authorities scrambling to uncover the details. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the gunfire erupted after 9 p.m. Thursday on Greenway Drive near Emerald Lake Drive following an argument between two groups that sharply to turn violent.
The victims, whose ages span from 18 to 48, all suffered gunshot wounds and were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. As of Friday morning, all six men remain hospitalized, enduring injuries that ranged in severity. The DeKalb County Police Department, in their search for answers, have been speaking to witnesses and looking to piece together what unfolded through available surveillance footage, as referenced in the report by Atlanta News First. No suspects have been taken into custody as of yet, and those not injured in the shootout seem to have left the scene.
Residents of the usually quiet neighborhood have expressed their anger and disbelief regarding the terrifying incident. "It's like something you see on TV," Veronica Green told FOX 5. Another neighbor, reflecting the surprise and fear such violence has sown in their community, asserted that the shooting initially sounded like the startling bursts of large firecrackers. Investigators have confirmed that the shooting spanned an entire block, leading to a significant police presence as they combed the area for evidence.
Community members have also expressed their frustration, with one neighbor bluntly advising, "Stop doing stupid stuff," as per FOX 5's reporting. The sentiment reflects a broader exasperation with a culture of violence that appears to be both a symptom and a cause of deeper, unaddressed societal issues. Amidst the confusion and concern, DeKalb Police are urging anyone with information to reach out to the Homicide Assault Unit or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously for a chance at a cash reward for tips leading to an arrest and indictment.
