Forefront in the initiative to enhance legal system transparency, Snohomish County unveils its Law and Justice Dashboard, serving as a pioneering model by amalgamating data from both law enforcement and prosecutors. The project, which unfolded over a two-year period, culminated in a tool designed to shed light on the workings of the local criminal justice system. "It has taken tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to reach this point, and we are very excited to share the dashboard with the public," Jason Cummings, Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney, expressed with a nod towards the effort invested.
The genesis of the dashboard drew on the synergy between the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, the county's IT department, and the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Reinforced by a partnership with Microsoft and the intellectual prowess of the City University of New York’s Institute for State and Local Governance—an alliance made possible by a Microsoft grant—has yielded a diagnostic review and the technical footing necessary for this public interface.
Microsoft's advocacy for justice reform is echoed in the words of their Justice Reform Initiative Lead, Kevin Miller, "The launch of the Law and Justice Dashboard marks an important step toward advancing transparency and fairness in Snohomish County criminal legal system," he remarked, recognizing the collaborative effort that underpins the project's success.
While disparate justice system dashboards exist elsewhere, Snohomish County's approach to merge multifaceted legal data aspires to offer a more complete comprehension. "Clear, comprehensive and accessible data means everyone from prosecutors to the public can better understand their criminal legal systems," articulated Benjamin Estep, Research Project Director for CUNY’s Institute for State and Local Governance, outlining the expected benefits of the dashboard in tracking, and preemptively assuring effective community service.
The dashboard stands out not merely as an aggregator of legal procedures, but also as an analytical tool that factors in race, age, and gender. This data stratification aims to enhance the way criminal justice partners and decision-makers tackle the systemic processing of individuals.
