Law enforcement agencies in South Florida have been actively responding to a wave of theft and burglary impacting local businesses. In Broward and Palm Beach counties, a sequence of business burglaries caught the attention of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, leading to the arrests of two men, Zeffery Lundy and Micah Jackson. WSVN reported that the crimes spanned eight Dunkin’ Donuts locations and one Mobile gas station, with the suspects allegedly stealing cash after hours.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office’s coordinated initiative included the Burglary Apprehension Team and Deerfield Beach District detectives working in sync, culminating in a surveillance operation. The team followed a suspect from a Dunkin’ Donuts in Dania Beach to a Chevron gas station in Lauderdale Lakes, where the arrests were made. According to WSVN, a white 2018 Chevrolet Equinox linked to the burglaries was pivotal in cornering the suspects.
Meanwhile, a separate theft operation targeting mail checks has been plaguing businesses. In an arrest filmed by surveillance cameras, two men were apprehended at gunpoint in Southwest Miami-Dade. These individuals are accused of pilfering checks from the mailbox of Pro-Air Solutions, with CBS News Miami obtaining exclusive footage of the event. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service monitored the scene, stepping in after weeks of reported thefts.
One of the victims, Kenneth Ramirez, co-owner of the business, told CBS News Miami, "It was devastating." Expressing the significance of these checks for his 20 employees and customer relations, Ramirez's account paints a picture of the deeply personal impact such crimes have on small businesses. He further stressed the importance of honest labor, suggesting, "Get a job so you can support your family."
Amid these troubling events, U.S. Postal Inspector Blanca Alvarez has offered advice and reassurance to the public. In efforts to mitigate mail theft, Alvarez promotes vigilance and the use of services like Informed Delivery, which provides recipients with advanced notifications of their incoming mail. She told CBS News Miami, "By reporting to the postal inspection service and other agencies we are able to document incidents and follow up and investigate them. It's important that your viewers know that if they suspect suspicious activities to report that to the postal inspection service and their local police departments."
