The culturally vibrant Plaza Mariachi located on Nolensville Pike in South Nashville is presently in the throes of a foreclosure proceeding. WKRN reported that the Hispanic shopping and cultural center, which has been a gathering hub since its inception in 2017, received a foreclosure notice from its lender, First Financial Bank. The notice was served on Tuesday, June 5th, signaling a potential shift in ownership for the property at 3955 Nolensville Road.
The current owner of the Plaza, Mark Janbakhsh, has been ensnared in legal battles since he was federally charged in 2022 with conspiracy to commit bank fraud related to operations at Auto Masters, of which, he was a proprietor. Despite the looming foreclosure sale set for July 2, 2024, Janbakhsh is adamant that Plaza Mariachi will remain operational. In a press release, he asserted that the Plaza is not closing and conveyed ongoing negotiations with alternative lenders and real estate brokers to forge a new path forward financially.
Plaza Mariachi has stood as a beacon of multicultural engagement, transforming a disused Kroger building into a vibrant locale accentuated by Latin American culture, including art, cuisine, and most notably, music. The venue's principals argue that the space continues to generate a healthy cash flow and remains current with all due payments, as NewsChannel5 reports.
The reassurances from Plaza Mariachi come amidst a statement, wherein, representatives from the cultural center indicated that their recent property appraisals far exceed the debt burden. They highlighted the continued success of their retail tenants, the vibrant customer activity, and the hope to offset financial issues by selling peripheral land for restructuring debts. "We have a number of retail shops inside Plaza Mariachi who continue to lease from us and who are enjoying a large customer base," they mentioned in their statement.
The future of Plaza Mariachi hangs in the balance as July 2 draws near, a date that might dictate a new chapter for this cultural landmark, according to information gleaned from the Nashville Business Journal. With stakeholders and the community watching closely, the next few weeks are certain to be pivotal in determining whether Plaza Mariachi can continue to operate as a hub for cultural celebration or if it will succumb to the pressures of its financial entanglements.
