Southwest Atlanta is poised for a revamp with the new State Opportunity Zone designations near Greenbriar Mall and along Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. According to a recent announcement from the City of Atlanta, these areas meet the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) criteria for development incentives, targeting regions that are underdeveloped, blighted, or economically distressed. The Opportunity Zone program is a tax credit initiative aimed to stimulate business growth and job creation within designated locales.

Mayor Andre Dickens voiced his support for the initiative, highlighting the role of the Opportunity Zones in fostering small business investments, ultimately benefitting residents with increased prosperity. An announcement by the City of Atlanta elaborated on the specifics, stating, "The $3,500 per job state tax credit is available to businesses that create at least two jobs in a tax year." a move which, has the potential to animate the corridors of Campbellton Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive with new economic activities.

The designated areas fall chiefly within Atlanta City Council Districts 11 and 10, where councilmembers Marci Collier Overstreet and Andrea Boone respectively, welcomed the news. “This is a big win for District 11 because Opportunity Zones have the double benefit of providing tax credits for businesses and creating jobs for District 11 residents.” Overstreet communicated. Adding to the conversation, Boone mentioned, “These news Opportunity Zone designations extending from the West Lake MARTA station all the way to I-285 will spark new economic activity and job creation in District 10 along the MLK corridor.” according to Invest Atlanta.

Bringing to light the ongoing efforts in economic development, Dr. Eloisa Klementich, president and CEO of Invest Atlanta remarked on the synergy between Opportunity Zones and existing programs. "Opportunity Zones will accelerate the impact we are making in these communities through the Tax Allocation Districts along these corridors and other economic development programs." as per the City of Atlanta. Over the past five years, the initiative has been credited with creating over 4,600 jobs in underinvested areas of the city. The Opportunity Zone tax credits, effective for a maximum of five years provided the jobs are sustained, are part of a larger framework established under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, with over 8,764 Qualified Opportunity Zones across the U.S. serving as beacons of intended economic uplift.
