Residents in Southwest Austin are facing a call to conserve water today as the city prepares for necessary repairs on a critical water main. Austin Water is executing a major repair on a 48-inch pipeline that's sprung a leak, leading to requests for reduced water usage across a broad area. “We’re used to repairing water lines in every condition and every weather," Randi Jenkins from Austin Water stated in an interview with CBS Austin. These repairs are anticipated to take between eight to twelve hours.
Despite the inconvenience, the city is taking preemptive actions to ensure residents maintain access to drinking water. Ahead of the Friday repairs, bottled water is set to be distributed at Bowie High School from 7 AM to 7 PM. A local resident, Chad Crotchet, told KVUE, "We grabbed one gallon. We keep that in the fridge just in case... Uh that's kind of extra emergency." This is reflective of the multiple individuals in the region who have been storing emergency supplies of water.
The area affected by the service interruption is expansive, reaching from north past US 290 to the Southwest Parkway, south past the Shady Hollow neighborhood to the SH-45 Southwest area, as well as from Menchaca Road east to Oak Hill west. Residents may not notice an interruption in their water service; however, Austin Water cautions that water will not flow into the Southwest Austin system for the entire duration of the repair work. Conservation efforts are vital to ensure the water supply remains stable during this period.
Conservation measures requested by Austin Water include refraining from laundry, car washing, filling swimming pools, and any other high-volume water activities. Shay Rose Rawson, the director for Austin Water, said, “The pipe itself is in good condition, but we need to repair this leak. And so in order to do that, we have to take this major transmission maine out of service,” emphasizing the necessity of these repairs. With trust in the city's abilities, residents like Crotchet are willing to comply if it means ensuring long-term infrastructure reliability.
