Following a tragic incident at Elleven45 Lounge in Buckhead on May 12, where two individuals lost their lives and four others were injured, the suspect, 21-year-old Karanji Reese, has turned himself into the Atlanta Police Department. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Reese surrendered on June 5 and now faces charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The city responds with efforts to expediently close the establishment, citing a history of violations. Atlanta City Councilman Michael Heard stated, "The office of the city solicitor, Raines Carter, has opened an investigation into their licensing and into some of the incidents that have taken place since they've been in operation." Meanwhile, the Mayor's office released a statement conveying condolences to the families and a determination to "leverage any" of their tools to ensure community safety. The family of Mariam Creighton, one of the victims, has launched a wrongful death lawsuit against the nightclub, claiming that the venue failed to exercise the security measures that could have prevented such violence.
In an agreement reached before it could go before a judge, the club has consented to remain closed for 60 days with a hearing set for August to determine its long-term fate. During a press response gathered at the Fulton County Courthouse, Tracey Eason, the mother of Mariam Creighton, expressed a demand for accountability from the club, which she accuses of deflecting blame. "The community didn't kill my baby nor did racism," Eason told FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to a lawsuit detailed by WSB-TV, the incident which claimed the lives of Mariam Creighton and Nakyris Ridley could have been averted. The lawsuit accuses the club of negligence, alleging it allowed "an armed individual(s) to enter and remain inside the crowded Premises for an extended period of time." Additionally, the claim asserts that the establishment was "poorly maintained" and "unsafe." The club's owners, who have yet to issue a formal apology, voiced on social media the belief that the closure efforts are racially motivated and announced plans to upgrade their security protocols.
Reese’s connection to the victims has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the argument within the club that preceded the shooting had any direct link to the tragic outcome. These details are expected to unfold as the investigation continues and as the city of Atlanta and the involved families seek justice for what has occurred.
