An intensive manhunt culminated on Wednesday with the arrest of an alleged gang member in connection with a Gwinnett County murder, bringing a modicum of closure to a case that has troubled the community since mid-May. Alexis Coria, identified by authorities as a member of the Sureños gang, was taken into custody by members of the Gwinnett County Fugitive Unit with charges that include malice murder, felony murder, and two counts of aggravated assault, actions that have punctuated the long-standing narrative of gang violence with a stark reminder of its deadly potential.
The arrest, a concerted effort by law enforcement, followed days of surveillance after investigators tracked Coria to an address in Dunwoody, where he was seen departing in a Honda Accord, the fugitive unit doggedly trailed the vehicle all the way to Acworth, determined not to let their suspect out of sight, and with the cooperation of local police, they executed a traffic stop that ended with Coria in handcuffs. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, it was this sequence of events that led to the successful apprehension of the suspect.
Details surrounding the murder case to which Coria is linked unravel further with the tragic death of 30-year-old Kevin Valdez, who, as reported by Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau, was found fatally shot in the early hours of May 19 in a shopping center parking lot off Indian Trail Lilburn Road, a stark scene that became the center of the subsequent investigation.
While Coria's arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation, authorities continue to probe the circumstances of Valdez's death and urge anyone with information to come forward, the Gwinnett County Police Department's Tip Line at (770) 619-6655.
