Last week, the Women’s Therapeutic Residential Center (WTRC) celebrated the academic achievements of 23 incarcerated women who earned certificates and degrees while serving their sentences. These educational milestones were achieved in partnership with various Tennessee colleges and universities, highlighting a state-wide effort to better equip inmates with knowledge and skills for successful integration into society post-incarceration.

The graduation had inmates receiving certifications in computer information technology from the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, associate degrees in business administration from Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC), and liberal arts certificates from Rhodes College. "We begin preparing inmates for reentry on the day they first come into our custody," Frank Strada, Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC), told the Tennessee Department of Correction. He noted the strategic importance of education in improving public safety and reducing recidivism.

This initiative indicates the broader educational efforts within Tennessee's penitentiary system. The Tennessee Department of Correction has been collaborating with a network of 12 colleges and universities, offering a range of vocational, associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs to incarcerated individuals across the state.

At the DSCC graduation ceremony, United States Attorney Kevin Ritz addressed the graduates. "It matters how people spend their time when they are serving a criminal sentence because it can help them avoid appearing in front of a judge in the future," Ritz said, as per the Tennessee Department of Correction. He celebrated the occasion as an act of preparing the graduates to be reinstated Tennesseans upon their release. Since its opening in 2016, WTRC has seen 63 inmates graduate with college degrees or certificates through its educational partnerships.
