A recent study reveals that Texas is home to three of the nation’s deadliest highways, so it's essential to stay vigilant and buckle up. Looking at the numbers compiled by Munley Law from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Express News reports that Interstate 14, I-45, and I-30 are among the nation's most treacherous roads based on fatal accidents per 100 miles.
Specifically, I-14 has the infamous distinction of being the second deadliest highway in the country, with eight fatal crashes in 2022 alone which amounted to a staggering 31.9 fatal crashes per 100 miles of road, as the data indicated I-45, not too far behind, links Houston and Dallas and tallied 83 fatal wrecks last year, ranking it fourth with an average of 29.1 fatal collisions per 100 miles. The Houston Chronicle echoes these findings, emphasizing the urgent need for increased safety awareness among drivers traversing these routes.
The shared highway of North Texas and Arkansas, I-30, made it to number seven, where 69 fatal incidents were recorded in 2022, aptly averaging 18.8 deadly accidents per 100 miles. This makes it perilously prominent on the list of highways that drivers might want to approach with extra caution.
Texas drivers have another substantial reason to be careful, especially concerning alcohol-impaired motorists on the road. The sobering analysis by the Pennsylvania law firm highlighted in the Express News showcases that in 2022, Texas had the fifth-highest number of fatal crashes involving a driver with a blood alcohol content above .08 per 100,000 residents, this is over 51% higher than the national average, it's a stark reminder of the dangers posed by drunk driving.
