In a conscious embrace of the LGBTQ community, the Travis County Clerk's Office in Texas has launched a weeklong series of free wedding ceremonies to celebrate the ninth anniversary of same-sex marriage legalization. The ceremonies, which began on Saturday, offer a tangible space for couples to solemnly and joyfully affirm their right to marry. In an official press release, Travis County Clerk Dyana Limon-Mercado expressed the county's firm commitment "to supporting and celebrating the rights of all Texans, including the right to marry who they love, regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression," as reported by KXAN.
Couples wishing to partake in this celebratory offering must ensure to have obtained their marriage license at least 72 hours prior to their ceremony. Today, Monday is the critical cutoff for those aiming to wed on the final day of celebration this Friday. Appointments can swiftly be set by visiting the county's website, where details and procedures are outlined for the interested parties. Last year's single-day event has thus generously expanded into an entire week, allowing for a wider embrace of those seeking to commit their lives to one another.
In a parallel celebration of Pride Month and this historical anniversary, Judge Denise Hernández is hosting complimentary wedding ceremonies in Travis County. Judge Hernández, who also celebrated her marriage in 2019, understands firsthand the sting of discrimination and the importance of creating a secure and inclusive environment for such a significant life moment. "It means so much to be able to give back to the community, to create a safe space for love, in a way that says, I see you and I support you regardless of who you love, your gender identity or sexual orientation," Hernández told FOX 7 Austin in an interview.
The weddings coordinated by Hernández will take place at The Cathedral ATX – a boutique art gallery and event venue that mirrors the inclusivity the judge fiercely advocates for. The venue, along with various local vendors and community figures, is contributing to the festivities with refreshments, customized cars for photo ops, and floral decorations, among other offerings. "I feel very honored. It's truly a representation of why this place was built in the first place. We really wanted to provide a safe and welcoming space for everyone. And it just makes me feel very honored that we're able to make people feel celebrated in this space," Mónica Ceniceros, owner of The Cathedral ATX, expressed her sentiments in an interview with FOX 7 Austin. Hernández will also join the other free ceremonies organized by the county this Friday, June 28th, fostering a broader collaboration amidst these celebrations.
This collective initiative from Travis County officials, local judges, businesses, and the community at large stands as a beacon of support and affirmation. As the week continues to unfold, it bears witness to the existing ethos of unity and acceptance, honoring love in all its forms. For details on wedding ceremonies and participation, prospective couples are encouraged to visit the Travis County Clerk’s Office website or reach out to The Cathedral ATIN for more information on Judge Hernández’s ceremonies.
