A shootout in Pontiac has left two men hospitalized, with one suspect now behind bars. The confrontation erupted Friday night at an establishment on Huron Street, known as an “after-hours meeting place.” The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office received reports of gunfire and arrived on the scene to discover a business in the strip mall peppered with bullet holes, according to WWJ Newsradio.
Inside, deputies encountered a 23-year-old Pontiac man with a minor gunshot wound to the back, brandishing an AR-style rifle, which he surrendered to authorities. Another man, also 23, was found critically injured in a back room. Both were transported to the hospital, where the latter remains in critical condition. The shootout also resulted in several parked cars being struck by the stray gunfire, as reported by WXYZ.
Law enforcement officials discovered multiple shell casings scattered across the street and inside the building, along with a substantial cache of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The setting and the evidence pointed to possible drug-related activities within the establishment. Under the weight of this discovery, police managed to track down a 28-year-old Pontiac man identified as the suspected shooter. "Our suspect just recently got paroled this year, not a lot of time out on the street before appears he got right back into criminal activity," Sheriff Michael Bouchard conveyed in a statement obtained by WXYZ.
The apprehended suspect's vehicle further corroborated the law enforcement's suspicions, as deputies uncovered marijuana, a scale, and baggies, indicating a potential nexus to drug dealing. This individual was arrested and is being held at the Oakland County Jail pending charges.
