In a move to better support and guide at-risk youth towards brighter futures, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office have rolled out their Summer Mentorship Program for the fourth consecutive year. The program, which commenced on May 31 at Atlanta Technical College Preparatory Academy, aims to provide intensive mentoring to youngsters who've had encounters with the legal system.
U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan commented on the initiative's objectives, laying out a vision where the program is designed "to offer a solid foothold on a path to economic, social, and educational opportunities," as detailed in an announcement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Buchanan pointedly emphasized the importance of keeping the youth "engaged over the summer" to effectively curb recidivism and boost community safety.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis expressed her office's commitment to the partnership, which has borne real, positive change for juveniles in the area. "Our cooperative efforts have made a real difference in getting kids back on track," Willis said, "and we look forward to another summer of working with kids and making Fulton County a safer, more just place for everyone," as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Key to the program's effectiveness are community partners unwavering in their support. Commissioner Shawanda Reynolds-Cobb of the Department of Juvenile Justice brought to focus the essential nature of "community involvement" in nurturing an environment where at-risk youth are given both structure and accountability. The initiative will make certain to actively engage participants, aged 15 to 19, in activities that range from support forums and career readiness training to community service, aiming to also enroll them into the Atlanta Technical College’s Dual Achievement Program to secure both a diploma and technical certification.
The initiative is the effort of multiple organizations, including Southeast Credible Messengers and the PSN Prevention and Reentry program. The Summer Mentorship Program's robust network of support spans various entities like the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Office of Reentry Services, Fulton County Juvenile Court, and several local businesses and nonprofits focused on youth mentorship and public safety.
As for the young minds set to embark on this transformative journey, the program not only offers knowledge and guidance but also stipends that recognize their day-to-day dedication. Such a comprehensive approach fulfills a holistic vision – one where mentorship transcends mere engagement, seeding the very grounds from which new beginnings can decidedly grow.
