Attention all drivers, cyclists, and walkers around Walnut Grove and Farm Rd: you're going to need to adjust your routes for the next two weekends. According to a recent notice from the City of Memphis, there are some safety upgrades in the works that are going to shake things up a bit traffic-wise.
Starting this Friday, June 14, at about 6:30 p.m., the westbound outside lane on Walnut Grove Road and the northbound lane on Farm Road will be taking a little break until Monday, June 17, when they'll get back to work bright and early at 5:00 a.m. Meaning, they'll be closed for the weekend. While the workers are doing their thing, the eastbound and westbound turn lanes are going to be a bit snug, too. And for those used to crossing where Walnut Grove meets Farm Rd on foot or on two wheels, you'll need to plot a new course—the pedestrian and cyclist crossing is off-limits during the hustle.
Don't think it's over after that. The construction gods give us a few days respite before going back at it on Friday, June 21, again at that magical hour of 6:30 p.m. This time, they're taking the westbound inside lane and the eastbound outside lane on Walnut Grove into their care until Monday, June 24, at about 5:00 a.m. Pedestrian and bike access? Still a no-go at that same crossing.
Now, for those of you loyal to the trail systems by Shelby Farms Park, it's strongly suggested to play it safe and find an alternate route. And look, we know how much of a pain detours can be, especially when you're just trying to enjoy your weekend. But safety improvements are important, especially when it comes to dodging cars on your daily jog or bike ride. So plot that new path, maybe discover a part of the city you haven't seen before, and think of it as an urban adventure, albeit an enforced one.
