A 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following a shooting in South Memphis that led to the death of a 15-year-old boy. The incident occurred on Friday night and prompted a response from the Memphis Police Department around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Third Street and Trigg Avenue, as reported by Action News 5.
The young victim, later identified by his mother as Victor Cooper, was taken quickly to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital but, tragically, was pronounced dead soon after arrival. The 17-year-old suspect now faces not only a first-degree murder charge but also two counts of attempted first-degree murder. To apprehend those involved swiftly, authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward and to directly contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH, as further details regarding the case are still emerging, according to WREG.
Amidst this heartbreaking situation, Marketha Cooper, the victim's mother, relayed her profound grief and shared her son's character, emphasizing his nonviolent nature and academic prowess. "I can't get him back," she lamented in a statement obtained by WREG. "They went too far from what I’m hearing. It’s like overkill. You shot him and ran him over That’s overkill to my baby. That’s an angel." Mrs. Cooper insisted on the innocence of her son, who was known for his polite demeanor and was even featured on the "Ellen" show for his scholastic achievements.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Memphis Police Department has yet to release more details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The name of the suspect has not been publicly disclosed due to their minor status.
