In an early morning escapade on Wednesday, a 22-year-old man briefly commandeered a Seattle Fire Department truck after approaching the vehicle on a scooter, only to be arrested after his getaway was thwarted by the engaged parking brake. According to KOMO News, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on the 9200 block of Second Avenue Southwest in Seattle, the perpetrator was subsequently apprehended and booked into King County jail for theft of a motor vehicle.
Police were summoned to the scene after SFD personnel reported the theft of their engine, which was originally on a medical call at the Arrowhead Gardens senior living complex the Seattle Police Department arrived and detained the suspect after he had only managed to drive around the corner due to the parking brake not being fully released. The fire engine was quickly recovered, allowing the interrupted medical service to proceed, as detailed by King 5 News.
The suspect, whose identity has yet to be disclosed to the public, activated the fire truck's lights and sirens during the brief theft, catching the attention of both authorities and the local media. The firetruck involved was from South Park-based Engine 26, as noted by the SFD incident log, the West Seattle Blog reported.
This incident marks the suspect's ninth arrest in as many months, with previous arrests mostly involving short stints in custody, though the most recent one, before this incident, saw him jailed from June 20 to July 1 on two separate stolen-vehicle cases these current cases are still in progress, with hearings slated for early August. Despite the frequency of his brushes with the law, court records do not indicate any felony convictions in his past, a pattern that might be changing given the gravity of his latest alleged escapade.
