
A tragic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon when a 22-year-old woman died after being rescued from the Chicago River at the city’s Riverwalk Park. According to the Chicago Tribune, the young woman was seen lowering herself into the water around 2:30 p.m., prompting an emergency response from Chicago Fire Department medics.
The rescue efforts were witnessed by about 100 people, who watched as paramedics performed chest compressions at the scene, near Dearborn Street, and West Wacker Drive, as per the Chicago Tribune. Despite the swift action of the first responders, the woman was unfortunately pronounced dead shortly before 3:30 p.m., as reported by the Cook County medical examiner's office. "An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday".
Officials have not yet released the name of the woman as investigations are underway. The Chicago Police Department's Area Three detectives are looking into the circumstances that led to the woman’s untimely death, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Chicago Fire Department crews were able to quickly retrieve the woman from the river, and paramedics rushed her to the nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she died, police said.
