A tragic event unfolded on the afternoon yesterday, when a 63-year-old male bicyclist was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Martin Street SE and Ormond Street SE. The victim, whose name has not been released, was found unalert and unconscious by officers responding to the scene. He was taken to the hospital but, sadly, did not survive his injuries.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, the preliminary investigation indicates that the accident occurred when the bicyclist, headed southbound on Martin Street SE, did not yield at the stop sign at the intersection, he collided with a 2015 Toyota Camry traveling westbound on Ormond Street SE, which resulted in him being thrown from his bicycle into the roadway—the driver of the Toyota remained on scene, cooperating with law enforcement.
The circumstances of the collision are still under scrutiny as officers with the Accident Investigations Unit are piecing together the events that led to the fatal outcome. The investigation is delving into various aspects, including traffic signals, vehicular speed, and potential distractions for both the bicyclist and the car driver at the time of the crash.
