An 88-year-old woman, identified as Deane Campbell Griffin of Lincolnton, has died following a vehicle crash that occurred on the afternoon of July 27. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported the incident happened at the intersection of US 321 Business and Bynum Road around 12:10 p.m. According to QC News, Griffin was driving a 1990 Chevrolet truck east on Bynum Road when she attempted a left turn onto US 321 Business and collided with a 2003 Honda Odyssey.
Troopers indicated the Chevrolet turned in front of the southbound Honda, which led to the tragic accident. Griffin was critically injured and subsequently transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Honda, Brianna Stantel McCleave, 26, of Bessemer City, and three other passengers in the Honda were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, as reported by WBTV. The road remained closed for approximately two hours for an on-scene investigation following the crash.
Further inquiries by the State Highway Patrol concluded that neither impairment nor speed were factors contributing to the collision. A statement released by the Patrol clarified that no charges would be filed in connection to the crash. The unfortunate event briefly disrupted local traffic flow, but law enforcement efficiently managed the aftermath to restore order on the roads.
